Gricks Jellied Eels (known by staff as ‘The Firm’) was an Original East End Seafood business, steeped in history and ‘stories’. Started by my Grandfather following ww2 after he’d worked a Queens Road market pitch while the also area famous family owners enjoyed self evacuation away from the East End.
Initially from premises in Walpole and Woodgrange Road, Grandad bought what used to be Co Op dairy premises in Shelley Avenue E12, not Roseberry Avenue as shown below the picture.
Over three generations and most members of the family including myself worked at sometime for the business. My Father from the age of 12 until he retired at more than 76.
He is still in reasonably good health some nine years later. Dad was genuinely the hardest working man I have ever known, achieving wonders keeping things going through incredibly difficult times.
The picture shown isn’t actually that old, been probably late 90’s early 20’s and taken after closing on a Saturday or Sunday while working in the office but still open to latecomers who would ring bell for experience of our famed customer service.
I have a number of much older pictures and would enjoy sharing these an also old tales passed down and of my own.
